Shots are long, the better for apprehending the visually dense scenes and the isolated moods of the almost-empty exceptions. 4:3 is working so well, focusing and constraining the exterior environments as well as the tight European interiors and ship. No chance of panoramic adventure here. Magellan-the-guy in these cramped frames seems as much constructed as enabled by his imperial world. Most of his action occurs offscreen; we see instead the scenic consequences, the aftermaths.
